Election Bought & Sold Here

How about this current administration, huh?

With all of the greed from Corporate America, Super PACs and lobbyists that permeates our society these days, I was finally inspired to put this design to paper: “Elections Bought & Sold Here” / two color silk screen on 5 x 7 inch chipboard / signed open edition.

I always like to add a little humor to my print designs, even the thought-provoking ones.

So, what do I mean by 'Elections Bought & Sold Here?' On January 21, 2010 the Supreme Court ruled that freedom of speech prohibits government from restricting independent political expenditures by nonprofit corporations, for-profit corporations, labor unions and other associations (Citizen’s United vs. FEC.) This ruling, no doubt, opened the flood gates for UNLIMITED campaign contributions from public and private donors, thus allowing anyone or any group to essentially buy any election deemed to cater to their needs.

Political corruption existed long before the Citizen’s United ruling, but it is in the face of the American Public, now more than ever. Who knows if the ruling will ever be deemed unconstitutional by a future Supreme Court bench, but it is one of the most egregious rulings against a fair and balanced American public.

I really try not to get too wound up by politics these days, but I can't seem to help myself right now, and I'm sure I'm not the only sane American who feels this way. Making art in this form is really the best way for me to cope and communicate my frustrations about what's been going on in the US since Election Day 2016. Anyhow, let's not completely cave to the crazy.
